Falmouth

A Bucolic Town and an Active Community

Alison Caron

Tree-lined streets, majestic beaches and harbors, a quaint downtown and bucolic farms all make up the beautiful town of Falmouth. But these characteristics do not tell the whole story. Falmouth is first and foremost a community of people that live and work together; creating cultural, sporting and recreational opportunities for everyone to participate in and enjoy.

Tucked down in the southwestern corner of the Cape and bordered by water on two sides Falmouth is an ideal boater’s paradise and the perfect location for ferries to the islands. Farms in the villages of Hatchville and East Falmouth offer locally grown vegetables, produce and wine, many of which can be found at the local farmer’s market.

The Falmouth Village Association is one of many organizations that bring the town together. Throughout the year the association sponsors an Easter egg hunt, May Day baskets, a farmer’s market, July 4th Bike and Carriage Parade, an arts and crafts street fair, Friday night concerts in the park, Movies Under the Stars, Trick or Treating on Main Street, and a holiday festival the first Saturday in December. All these events involve bringing the community and businesses together to enjoy historic downtown Falmouth.

Another organization that brings the community together while celebrating the area’s history is the Falmouth Historical Society and Museums on the Green. This organization takes pride in preserving and celebrating the rich history of Falmouth through exhibits, presentations, and special and ongoing events. The society takes pride in keeping the spirit of author and poet, Katharine Lee Bates alive with an annual Poetry Fest.

In addition to these organizations Highfield Hall actively brings the history of Falmouth to life. Along with preserving the history of the mansion and grounds, the folks at Highfield Hall sponsor many activities and events to take part in throughout the year. Families and individuals can enjoy art exhibits, cooking classes, music and concerts, special events and nature walks through the extensive Beebe Woods.

Falmouth is also home to the Cape Baseball League Falmouth Commodores, the Woods Hole Science Aquarium, Nobska Point Lighthouse and the Shining Sea bike trail, all points of interest that can be enjoyed by everyone at no cost.

Throughout the town one can find great shopping and dining experiences. Spas are plentiful as well for those who want to take a respite from all their adventures or the busyness of a full day. It is easy to fill many days exploring and enjoying all that Falmouth has to offer.
