Hyannis, one of the seven villages that make up the town of Barnstable, is often referred to as “the hub” of Cape Cod. The real gems of this village are its downtown and harbor areas. Main Street is home to gift shops, restaurants, clothing boutiques, and art galleries. The Harbor area teams with activity as boats and ferries come in and out all day while Artists set up shop in the HyArts Shanties and restaurants offer dining overlooking the harbor.
Throughout the summer Hyannis is alive with entertainment. On Fridays and Sundays the Hyannis Harbor Summer Sounds Concerts fill Aselton Park with sweet sounds of music. Tuesdays bring the Citizen’s Bank sponsored summer concerts and every Wednesday evening The Village Green is host to the Barnstable Town Band Concerts. On Thursdays children of all ages can enjoy the Seaside Clown show featuring veteran performers with Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey Circus Jay and Kristin Stewart. The best part of all this entertainment is that it is free! Just bring your picnic, blanket and bug spray and you will be in for a family-friendly good time.
During the daytime wander down the Walkway To The Sea and visit the artists’ shanties along the harbor. If you are passionate about local food and produce walk westward down Main Street toward the Hyannis Youth and Community Center on Bearses Way for The Downtown Farmer’s Market each Wednesday throughout the summer. Perhaps you are an aspiring shutterbug? If so you can join a qualified photographer for PhotoWalks 2011 a guided scenic walk around Hyannis offering tips on photography and historical information about the area.
Hyannis has a draw for everyone and there is no doubt that the shopping and dining are amongst the most popular. Add to that the plethora of free entertainment and you are in for a full and enjoyable visit.
