Private Luxury in North Falmouth

La Mermonte, the spectacular North Falmouth Cape Cod home is for sale. Cape Cod Magazine goes inside to give readers an exclusive peak.

Brian Vanden Brink

One of the glories of a Cape Cod summer home is the view and proximity to water and this upper Cape estate does not disappoint. Hidden away in an exclusive part of North Falmouth, La Mermonte (The Sea Rises) overlooks Buzzards Bay, Wild Harbor, and Old Silver Beach. Double carriage mahogany doors open onto a bright foyer with carefully placed art and well-thought out lighting, but the endless views of the dazzling water steal the show.

While often used by the current homeowners as a summer home for entertaining guests, the house, designed by architect John MacDonald of Morehouse MacDonald and Associates, is also fully equipped for year-round living, including an extensive chef’s kitchen. The female homeowner, a well-known Boston restaurateur, saw to it that a Wolf 6-burner range, double Thermador ovens, granite split-level counters, and a baker’s station were included in the kitchen overlooking the breakfast nook and water. While one might be tempted to sit and enjoy the view and fine interior design in the adjoining living room, everyone’s attention is pulled immediately to the nearby conservatory pavilion. Added on by the current homeowners, the conservatory’s ceiling is modeled after an upside down boat’s hull and paneled with rich teak. An eyebrow dormer window further pulls the attention to the lavish scale of the room. 8-foot by 8-foot windows and six beautiful accordion doors overlook the estate’s private access to the beach and pool corral. Outside, an infinity pool allows for swimming in sight of crashing waves and the nearby Jacuzzi is paneled in iridescent gold tiles. The outdoor cooking station is just as impressive with a wood burning pizza oven, fieldstone fireplace, and a barbeque pit. Also sharing these luxurious views is the guesthouse kitchen. A slightly smaller version of the high-end kitchen in the main house, the chef can open the windows onto the pool corral and hand out food or drinks. Brazilian Quartzite flooring covers an expansive lounging area that allows guests to mingle, eat, and sun themselves by the pool.

The guesthouse is slightly detached from the main house and with its own driveway the current homeowners were able to give their guests the sense of privacy they seek. Modeled after a Nantucket cottage, the main bedroom in the guesthouse boasts a vaulted ceiling, private ocean deck, and grass cloth wall paper. The two houses are separated by a gorgeous ornamental garden, filled with vibrant hydrangeas and climbing roses and designed by Horiuchi and Solien Landscape Architects.

Through this garden and back inside the main house,
the upstairs awaits. The master suite is light and airy and the tray ceiling holds an eye-catching chandelier. Harmonious aqua and cream tones add to the expansive feel of the room and this color scheme is extended into the master bathroom. Individually laid mother-of-pearl tiles sparkle on the walls and heated floors. A triple head shower and impressive Waterworks bathtub only add to the luxury of this soothing sanctuary.

As the home was set up and designed with family in mind, the guest suite at the far end of the upstairs hallway has a bedroom and bathroom for a child, private sitting room, and master suite for parents. The homeowners opted to use colors in soothing beach tones throughout the home and the upstairs guest suite is punctuated with cherry coral and sand hues. A second guest master suite is on the basement level and offers privacy while only being a few steps away from the main part of the home.

Other amenities include a two-car garage and seven full and one half bathrooms designed with hand-laid tile and exquisite finishing touches.

The beautiful estate has an overall feel of “sophisticated chic.” Perfect for year-round or summer living, new homeowners will enjoy its sensational views and how the interior living space flows seamlessly into the exterior entertaining areas.
