Room to Grow on Chapoquoit
The road follows the curve of the ocean as it winds along the edge of Chapoquoit Island. Just out the window of my car I can see clear blue ocean water beyond the white Cape Cod sand and a beautiful home perched among the landscape. As I step out of the car onto the gravel driveway the twinkling water catches the morning light.
The home, designed by Architect Tom Catalano of Catalano Design, is an impressive work of art. With rooms that seamlessly flow from one to another it’s easy to imagine the house filled with friends and family.
In the foyer, long leaf southern yellow pine floors shine and my eyes are immediately drawn to the detail of the staircase whose spokes evoke ocean waves. Hanging above the staircase are beautiful Murano glass light fixtures showering an almost natural light below. The entire house is designed around light, natural and by well-chosen light fixtures blending into the house’s aesthetics.
Moving from the foyer into the living room, the homeowner pauses to point out the expanse of the doorway as each entryway in the house is taller and wider than usual. The purpose here was to make movement through the house as easy as possible. In the living room, earth
tones are mixed with bright but natural colors. A black slate fireplace with detailed molding holds court at the center of the right hand wall. With the large windows and ocean view, it’s easy to imagine curling up on one of the inviting sofas with hot chocolate and a fire during the cold New England winters.
A similar sight waits in the family room next door. Passing through a small entryway, which has built-in bookshelves, there is
a distinguished feel to this media room. The fir ceiling is stained in an elegant cherry finish. On the far wall is a set of French doors leading out onto a small porch with an inviting swing.
Going back through the family room to the hall we take a moment to look into the beautifully decorated dining room where the large window looks to the “outdoor piazza.” Further down the hall, past the elegant door hiding the fully working elevator, we slip into the kitchen. The oft-used room is dominated, though not obtrusively, by a large island with a granite counter. With cabinets whose shelves can be raised to counter level for appliances and a second smaller kitchen with an extra stove and large pantry, this home easily caters to a large and active family. Leaving the kitchen you walk through an archway with built-in shelves for cookbooks into an octagonal domed copula breakfast room. The wood burning fireplace in this cozy room is from the original house and made of pink granite from Falmouth.
On the third floor, there are six bedrooms including the master suite with its own private balcony and spacious walk-in closet. Each of the bedrooms at the front of the house looks out over the ocean and the ones at the back of the house look out over the pool and patio below. One might expect to see the neighboring houses, but the landscaping of the lot is designed for complete privacy.
Moving from the upstairs down through the three-car oversized garage, we head into the backyard with the pristine pool and bluestone patio. Over the patio seating area is a beautiful wooden pergola with climbing hydrangeas and an outdoor wood-burning fireplace. An outdoor kitchenette with a grill and teak wood counters helps transition any party outdoors. The patio is complete with a double-headed outdoor shower lined with warm pink and yellow tinted stone, weathered wood walls, and an antique style lantern hanging overhead.
In addition to its fantastic location and gardens, the central vacuuming, air conditioning, and heating systems make this the perfect property to settle into. Whether you're a large family or a social butterfly, this house has plenty of room
for growth.
