Savoring the Good Life of Cape Cod

Lunch Break

Jan 21, 2011 - 10:24 AM

I tend to be a brown bag type of gal when it comes to the subject of lunch. Actually, it is more like a black lunch box that I can shove into the freezer every night type of gal. (The lunch box has cooler packs inside of it!)

But once in a while I like to stray from my usual salad or ham and cheese rollups (I guess I like to save my good eats for dinner and the weekend) and enjoy lunch out. Having met chef Toby Hill at Pain D'Avignon Café-Boulangerie in Hyannis last spring and loving the cafe's French food with a Mediterranean flare, I thought it was time to head back for lunch. The café was recently expanded with full-service at the brand new “Red Bar” and additional high-tops and tables. Guests can still order lunch at the counter and sit and socialize in the original part of the café, but the added space gives hungry diners a bit of breathing room to enjoy the French Bistro experience. Pain D’Avignon also serves dinner, from a large and inventive menu, Wednesday through Sunday. On a recent week day, the café was full of friends meeting for lunch and solo diners happily reading the paper over a bowl of soup and a soft roll.

A quick perusal of the lunch menu had me weighing a few delectable options, including the light and fresh Caprese salad, but I decided on the Roasted Prosciutto sandwich. My decision proved to be a perfect and delicious answer to midday hunger. Two soft, freshly baked brioche buns were slathered with a tasty mayonnaise aioli that paired perfectly with the salty prosciutto and light, crisp arugula. The sandwich comes with sweet pickles and homemade chips. I enjoyed it with an Acqua Panna (I can’t resist water in glass bottles) and a salty-sweet Kayak cookie.

Find Pain D’Avignon’s homemade breads, desserts, and filling sandwiches at 15 Hinckley Road, on the web at www.paindavignon.com or call ahead, 508.778.8588.
