The Who, What, Wear of Cape Cod

Not Your Ordinary Jewelry Box

Jan 10, 2011 - 10:18 AM

Item of the Week!

We all have bad habits that we just can’t kick. Some of us bite our nails, chew with our mouth open, or excitedly interrupt others. One of my bad habits is of the sartorial sort, as I tend to pile precious necklaces on top of each other after each day’s wear until they become a tangled mess. Most mornings see me juggling my coffee cup and untangling my jewelry as I make my way to my car. No ordinary jewelry box seemed to solve the problem, until I came across Ted Weissberger’s hand-carved wooden necklace boxes. The stylish box allows necklaces to hang naturally without becoming tangled with each other.

Weissberger knows a thing or two about wood turning. In addition to his brilliant necklace boxes, his beautiful handmade bowls, platters and pens are lusted after for their unique appearance. An active member of the Cape Cod Wood Turners Guild, the wood artist has been crafting the pieces for over eleven years.

“I've been working with wood for a long time but started seriously turning when we moved from Rochester, New York to Cape Cod in 1999,” says Weissberger. “While I'm primarily self-taught, I got my start when my wife gave me three lessons with a friend and gifted turner as a Christmas present prior to our move.” The Yarmouth Port resident doesn’t replicate his work exactly and each piece is unique, partly due to the variations in the wood. The artist works with cherry, cocobolo, walnut, maple, purplehart, and rosewood, among others.

In addition to purchasing wood pieces directly from the artist, you can also find his work at local craft shows where he exhibits as a member of the Artisans Guild of Cape Cod and the Society of Cape Cod Craftsmen and online at www.woodworksbyted.com
