A Wedding Insider's Guide from 'Yes' to 'I Do'

A Moment Worth Capturing

Feb 2, 2011 - 05:47 PM

My new favorite trend for 2011 weddings is hiring a photographer to photograph your proposal as it happens. The engagement itself usually flies by, yet we know that a lot of planning went into it that often goes unnoticed. By hiring a photographer to document the big event you can still have a private moment but you are able to capture the initial surprise. Everyone always wants to know how and when the engagement happens and what better way to tell your story than to have someone behind the lens taking pictures.

Here are some tips:

  • After hiring a photographer, which should be coordinated by the groom to be, make a site visit so you can discuss angles, timing etc. Since the photographer will not be able to communicate with you, you want to make sure you are on the same page.
  • The best time for lighting is 30 minutes before sunset so make sure you plan that time accordingly. If things are running behind or the spot doesn’t quite feel right, make sure you can secretly send the photographer a text message to keep them informed.
  • Have the photographer take some candids, the actual proposal and then reveal his or herself and take some portraits after the surprise.

Many photographers will build the pricing into their wedding packages and some will offer great rates if you do not want to hire them on the spot before consulting with your fiancé to be. One of our local favorites is Boston-based photographer, Juan Maclean. He is offering a one-time free surprise proposal session to one lucky couple that mentions this article! Email him now to see if you have won. Here is a recent engagement session by Juan.

Enjoy!
