Metal Artists on Cape Cod

A lot more artists than you might think work in this medium. In addition to Tom O’Dell, whom we profiled in the August 2011 issu
e, these are the best of the rest. Almost all of these artists are listed in the Sourcebook of Architectural and Design Elements, a collaborative effort between the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce, Coastal Community Capital, the Cotuit Center for the Arts, the Cultural Center of Cape Cod, and the Home Builders and Remodelers Association of Cape Cod (HB&RACC).
Steve Swain: Works specifically with mild steel in creating wall mounts, lighting fixtures, weathervanes, and many other items. Subjects include marine creatures, but he is open to special orders. Founder of Frying Pan Gallery.
Benton Jones: Sculptures integrating metal and glass.
Alfred Glover: whimsical, bronze, freestanding sculptures with colorful designs.
Richard W. Griffin, Jr.: Architectural works created from various metals and include fireplace tools, wall treatments, furniture and many others.
Robert S. Jordan: One of a kind items designed through a combination of brass, copper, stainless steel, aluminum, and glass. Items having included spiral staircases, furniture pieces, and ornate railings.
Sydney E. Ahlstrom: Specializing in life size work, most commonly of creatures and marine animals. An abstract artist and builder who has worked in Orleans for the past fifteen years.
And on the Islands:
Jamie Rogers: functional home and garden structures that can be custom designed such as cabinet pulls, fireplace tools, and lamps.
Whit Hanschka: Specializes in wrought iron, bronze, and stainless steel works such as furniture, fireplace screens, fences, gates, and many other designs.
Anthony Holand: Known for his distinctive weathervanes that are designed specifically with each client. He uses the copper respousse technique, which forms a raised design on the front. Designed a weathervane for the movie “Jaws,” along with weathervanes for Stephen Spielberg and the Clintons.
