An Ode to Sampson's

The last time we made it off the “mainland” out to Sampson’s Island, there was categorically something permeating the air that seemed to signal the inevitable shift from Summer to Autumn. And, the clusters of local families whose chronicles we’d grown accustomed to hearkening throughout the summer, had abandoned the shell-laden parcels they’d staked claim to, disbursing before the crispness blew in off the Sound.   Fond of the plummeting temperature, I decided to continue to prescribe the restorative powers that our preferred playground – which, as a pristine example of largely undisturbed beach and vegetation, offers organic spoils such as tidal flats and salt marshes – as a remedy for the end-of-summer-blues my children seemed...
